Gold Heat is transfered in three main ways. Convection is through the air. Conduction is by objects touching each other. And thirdly, by radiant energy. Insulation slows down the transfer through conduction. If you put your hand near a hot pan just off the stove, heat "radiates" off. This type of energy is more effectively reflected by a radiant barrier than slowed by insulation.
